If I have the following:

close > 40
close < 50
set{theAvg,cma(close, 100)}

will theAvg be the ma close of all colses for 100 days,
or
will theAvg be the ma for all closes that fall between 40 and 50?

Ure filter will find stocks with close between 40 and 50. As far as set function is concerned, "theAvg" will be evaluated as the 100-period moving average of the close. However, unless you merely want to know this value,you would need to tell SF what you want to do with this value. For instance, you want to see today's close above the "theAvg":

Fetcher[
close > 40
close < 50
set{theAvg,cma(close, 100)}
close above theAvg
draw ma(100)
