Here's a pc I'm considering, would be nice to stay under $600 for the pc itself... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229124 Even after reading this thread, I'm still not sure what would be the best way to get this 3-monitor set-up going.... - a single quad-port video card - two dual-port video cards (can you put multiple video-cards in the same case?) - whether it's one or multiple video cards - how do I know what kind of video cards I can put in the desktop case? I'm obviously not an IT guy, but I've got friends that will be able to help me install this stuff - assuming I get the right stuff! Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions. |

1/3/2010 5:12:26 PM The pre-built you linked too only has a single PCI-EXPRESS slot, so you would have to purchase a 4-head video card or other adaptor. witch will add another 200+ to the cost. Looking briefly on Newegg i did not see any pre-built systems that fit the price range with the needed specs for a decent multi-monitor trading machine. If you are able, I would build one with the following, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.306543 Compared to the system you link to, this has a better processor, much larger power supply, and hard drive. I like the case design in this one better too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125261 You'll need 2 of these video cards, low cost but plenty of power for trading and most current games. If you do any gaming you can run these in SLI. I you need more graphics power just be sure too purchase 2 identical video cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030 Any SATA optical drive will do, this was the cheapest. Also you will need whatever operating system you prefer. I would use windows 7 proffesoinal if all your needed software is supported, or 64-bit windows xp. But it's still a little bit pricier than I wanted to go, especially without an OS. Aren't there some pre-built options that already have one 2-port video card, and room for me to add another - that would accomplish the same thing? I really don't need a 1.5T HD, or the i5 chip... 1/3/2010 11:30:11 PM Yes the EVGA cards would be fine, just remember what ever cards you chose the must be the exact same version. Personally i would not go any lower in performance than the 9500gt. On newegg I did not see any IMO suitable pre-built's with 2 or more pci-express slots. You should look around some and see if you can find one elsewhere, but i would try to stay with the Intel I5 or better for performance. Also i would stay with min 4gb ram, min 600watt power supply (for dual video cards, be sure to make sure power supply has correct plugs for 2 video cards) |

1/4/2010 10:05:43 AM Here's a picture of my setup if anyone cares. From Digital Tigers. 6 X 24" I find that 3 monitors is fine for most cases. Even one monitor, depending on what one is doing. Three speakers on the bottom are configured in stereo. Left is all left, right is all right and center is both left and right channels. Top 3 monitors have one slow-speed fan on each for heat relief. CNBC also coming in from cable (upper right monitor PIP). Unbelievably, this system is very quiet! |

1/4/2010 10:42:25 AM LOL! I find that this system served me best by taking SF backtest data and Excel crunching the rows columns over the 6 monitors. This is what gives the warp speed. Once the trading system is developed, less monitors are required for actual trading. |
