how would you change your trading strategy?
I am currently using a "long only" strategy based on Bollinger Bands. It has been working OK over the past month or so, and has backtested really well recently. It even backtesting profitably during 11/1/08 - 3/1/09, so it has survived a pretty bad test period.
However, if the tide go out, all boats lower. Therefore, I am thinking that I may need to look for a confirmation signal after the initial entry signal is triggered, to avoid possible crap trades.
How are others thinking about their current systems and their approach if we start another down leg?

I started entering small positions in inverse ETF's today. I will close them if the dollar opens below support and will add to them as each resistance is broken. I am also long on defensive sectors(foods, Medical etc).

Trendscan:
THANKS for that filter.
However, I did notice, CONSPICUOUSLY missing from this list of ETFs is the mother of all ETFs ... FXP.
Around this time last year, FXP went from $78 on 9-23-08 to $219.00 on 10/09/08.
Then on 10/13/08, dropped to $82, then back up to $184 on 10-27.
Next to FAZ, FXP @ $8.68 today, is the most despised ETF on the planet.
And the most treacherous!
LOL!
Here's to riding the waves!
Cheers!

EEV is another ETF that'll give you a real thrashing.
@ the current price of $13.61, it "looks" like a steal.
Last Sept., this time, it went from $75 to $196 in a month.
NOT for the faint of heart.
The mere fact that these 2 (FXP & EEV) didn't show up on your list is a sign from G*d..
LOL!

Hi Karen. You're right, there's a number of short ETFs my filter didn't pickup, thanks for pointing that out. Dropping the line with "vol above avg vol(30)" picks up many others.
These look like they're bottoming to me. But I thought that last Friday when I bought some VXX and it dropped further this week. Challenging market to find perfect entry points, at least it has been for me lately.

That's the problem with "indicators" ... mine show the top (or "bottom") 's been in for a while.

In fact, I just checked my charts, and they're showing 09-09-09 ...
oh well ... so much for indicators, which can't beat G/S's HFT machines!

Happy Anniversary!
This week is the 1-year anniversary of Lehman Bros. demise.
Maybe Goldman Sucks will celebrate and bring the market down ... in rememberance.
(I know ... I'm mean)
