Observation. The market is going up this morning.
Interpretation. The bail out bill will pass the House.
Really solves the problem of all those derivatives based on mortgages secured by house prices still dropping on the down leg of an insane price bubble.
Oh yes folks. Security is best to be placed in the alphabet soup of IRA'S,401K's with the requirement that you give up control of your money,or pay a BIG penalty If you don't keep it in or violate the govmt withdrawal schedule.
Aint it great how the govmt helps the sheeple?

Well, one thing I'm sure you won't see in this bailout is an increase (temporary or otherwise) in the tax-deferred maximum you can contribute to investment programs...just a little thing that'd go a long way to bolstering investor confidence.
Or we can just give it all to NASCAR.

I don't day trade (typically). Taking advantage of volatily doesn't necessarily require daily round trips.
The elderly may be in trouble in the short term, but probably not. They rely on interest and dividends, not growth per se. As long as dividends don't get slashed they'll be fine.
Otherwise, here's some perspective: the most actives on friday before Black Monday 1987, arguably the worst day in history to buy stock, were all up 1 year later.

#1) Dividends HAVE been slashed.
#2) This is not 1987.

Aside from the financials, not in the latest earnings season dividends weren't slashed. We'll see about the upcoming.
And no, its not nearly as bad as 1987.
Understand, I'm not cheering on further market declines. I'm saying that it can be ridden out at worst, or profited from at best.
I'm also saying no one should feel guilty for choosing the latter, or at least no more than they do from profiting from an advancing market.

The historical evidence does show markets that do crash do make remarkable recoveries in time. Long term investors if they can close their eyes and ears and weather the storm hopefully the norm will continue to happen. Myself I am 100% cash position just waiting for the proper time to jump back in. I sleep well at night I know there will be exceptional opportunities for ones that have patience. Like in the past there will be new millionaires created in the future. My positive spin on this.
