"The PBS “Frontline” documentary “The Retirement Gamble” debuted on Tuesday night, and it made for a sobering introduction to the American savings crisis. If you’ve got 53 minutes to spare, and you’re the kind of person who’s galvanized by bad news, you can watch the entire report online at this link [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/retirement-gamble/]. I recommend it as a concise introduction to the biggest shift in the retirement landscape in our lifetimes – the migration from a corporate pension model to a self-funded model that depends on personal savings and investments."

Absolutely. You better be serious about saving for retirement (and good at timing the market) or you're screwed.

My big concern in this area is not the risk of losing capital in the short run as much as it is the risk of reaching retirement without enough to last me the rest of my life.

I look at it from a different perspective. I need to build core capital that will facilitate my income come retirement. I concerned with having equity that will make me money, not the money itself.

I ask folks all the time how much their broker charges them every year. They say $40. I laugh. The public does not know they are fleeced by fees and they rarely are called out in any statement.

This is truly said. I have however fired every broker I had and I do it all myself.

Most people don't even know what 401-k fund returns are. Most just throw darts at it and think everything will be fine. I help can some of my wife's funds a few years ago so she could get some better returns in the long run
