Apple Shares Turn Negative as Speculation Swirls Once Again Over Health of Steve Jobs 12/30 01:43 PM
01:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, 12/30/2008 (MidnightTrader) -- Apple Inc. (AAPL:$86.33,00$-0.28,00-0.32%) shares have sunk into the red this afternoon, last quoted down 69 cents, or 0.8%, at 85.92. The stock was trading mildly higher throughout this morning until a wave of selling at about 1300 ET quickly took the stock from $88 to $85. The stock is trading only modestly above its low for the year of $79.14.
A dark cloud hangs over the stock, not only because of weak consumer buying and new competition arising for its popular iphone, but due to continued speculation that CEO Steve Jobs' health is failing. Jobs, for the first time in more than 10 years, won't be presenting the keynote speech at next month's Macworld Expo. The gadget website Gizmodo.com is quoting an identified source as saying Jobs absence next month is a reflection of his rapidly deteriorating health.
